how we do it

One-off work changes what correct means. On a house the reference is the standard and the drawing. On a set, an exhibition build or a curved architectural feature, the reference is a render, a sketch or a conversation — and the job is working out a structure that arrives at that image, including all the parts nobody drew.

Set work runs to a different clock. It is built to be seen from one angle, under lights, for a fixed number of days, and then to come apart. That changes the framing: panels sized to pass through the doors they have to pass through, joints that undo without damage, weight kept where two people can move it, and finish concentrated on the faces the camera sees. What matters is that it stands, it reads right on the day, and it strikes cleanly.

Curved and non-standard joinery is the other half — laminated forms, kerfed and bent sheet, templates cut on site because the opening is never quite what the plan says. The method gets decided piece by piece, which is why this work is quoted after seeing the drawing rather than off a rate.

questions we get asked

Can you work from a render or a sketch instead of plans?
Usually that is exactly what arrives — an image and a dimension or two. The first step is turning it into a structure that can be built, stood up and, where it applies, taken down again.
Can you build to a shoot date?
Deadlines on set work are fixed, so we plan backwards from them. Tell us the date at the enquiry rather than at the quote.
Do you handle strike and removal?
Yes, where it is agreed up front. A set built to come apart costs far less to remove than a set built like a building.
Is one-off work priced by the hour or by the job?
By the job, after seeing the drawing. There is no useful rate for work where the method changes with every piece.
Can you build curved walls and joinery?
Yes — laminated, kerfed or segmented, depending on the radius and the finish it has to take.
